For one, there’s Mystique’s (Rebecca Romijn) eagerness to poison Xavier in spite of their earlier affection for one another. Depending on how far you’re willing to stretch your suspension of disbelief, a number of things in X-Men come off as either inconsistencies or intriguing developments in light of First Class. We don’t know how much, if any, contact the pair have had since First Class. It could very well be the first time they’ve seen each since the prequel’s climax in Cuba. With First Class under your belt, some emotional weight is added to interactions between Professor X (Patrick Stewart) and his opposite Magneto (Ian McKellen) in 2000’s X-Men. We’re also introduced to Jennifer Lawrence as a young Mystique, who meets Xavier when they’re children but is destined to become the mutant supremacist Brotherhood’s deadliest assassin. We get to see how the friendship between Xavier and Erik Lensherr (Michael Fassbender) forms, as well as the future Magneto’s earliest betrayals. Set in the early ’60s, First Class shows us the beginnings of what becomes Charles Xavier’s (James McAvoy) iconic team. Singer did help write the script and produce X-Men: First Class, as outlined here. I still contend that X-Men 2 is one of the best comic book movies ever, and if they can actually get Bryan Singer back, hopefully he'll get back to those roots, as his most recent fare (including Jack the Giant Slayer) hasn't been that great. I'd be happy to see Singer back, but who knows what will happen.Īs of just last week, Mark Millar (now overseeing all Marvel movies at Fox) hinted about sentinels in Days of Future Past, saying "you've got robots, you've got time travel, you've got superheroes." However, they drop one other juicy tidbit: "Atop the studio's replacement short list is Bryan Singer." Now I'm listening! But Deadline says "Vaughn has decided not to direct the sequel", passing on this and the Kick Ass sequel (being directed by Jeff Wadlow). Vaughn directed and delivered the first X-Men spin-off in 2011, and was expected to return for the follow-up, which Fox is pushing into development. Deadline is saying that filmmaker Matthew Vaughn, who signed on in January, is no longer going to direct the X-Men: First Class sequel. Well this is going to put a damper on the otherwise exciting X-Men/Wolverine news.
